Does TRICARE Cover Rehab?

Home » Blog » Does TRICARE Cover Rehab?

Many people who are either on active duty in the military, part of the reserves, or retired from active duty struggle with addiction and mental health issues. If you are struggling with addiction and mental health disorders, it can be challenging to seek help. However, when you receive treatment, this will help both you and your family to heal and build a better life. While paying for effective treatment can be difficult, TRICARE can help you to get the support you need.

TRICARE

The military offers many benefit plans for active members, members of the reserves and National Guard, and those who have retired. One of these is TRICARE. This is a healthcare initiative by the U.S. Department of Defense Health Care System that provides healthcare for the following groups of people:

  • Active military members and their families
  • Members in the reserves of any branch
  • Those in the National Guard
  • Retired military members and their families
  • Survivors of deceased military members
  • Certain former spouses worldwide
  • Medal of Honor recipients and families
  • Dependent parents and in-law parents
  • Foreign force members and families

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) explains that eligibility for TRICARE depends on military service. If you are uncertain whether you are eligible for TRICARE, you can contact the company to learn more about what programs might be available to you and your family.

Getting help for both mental and physical health concerns is important. Therefore, the military uses the Military Health System (MHS) as an integrated system that includes services from the following:

  • Military hospital
  • Authorized community hospitals
  • Military clinics
  • Non-military authorized civilian providers

Types of TRICARE

There are many types of TRICARE you may need depending on your situation. Certain plans are available for only active duty military, while others are not. Additionally, you can choose a specific plan depending on your healthcare needs. You first need to meet the criteria to show you are eligible and then you can choose what plan is best for you and your family. Working directly with a TRICARE representative is the best way to learn more about which plan is ideal.

Are Rehab Services Covered by TRICARE?

Whether TRICARE will cover your addiction treatment services is dependent on your specific situation that determines your eligibility. However, TRICARE usually covers drug and alcohol rehabilitation. If you are eligible for TRICARE and in need of addiction and/or mental health treatment, you can go to a large range of treatment centers and receive many different treatments. However, it is important to note that coverage will depend on the type of plan, the specific provider, and the details of the treatment plan.

TRICARE commonly covers the following services:

  • Inpatient services (emergency and non-emergency)
  • Intensive outpatient programs (IOPs)
  • Management of withdrawal symptoms (detoxification)
  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT)
  • Mental health therapeutic services
  • Office-based opioid treatment
  • Opioid treatment programs
  • Partial hospitalization programs (PHPs)
  • Residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment

These make up the bulk of the treatment programs covered. Although addiction treatment often includes additional holistic approaches that many individuals benefit from, TRICARE does not generally cover these.

Every TRICARE plan is different. While some may plans cover rehabilitation services in full, some will require a copay. If you are considering using TRICARE, speak with the treatment center to learn more about the specific modalities used and whether they are covered.

Addiction Among Military Members

Addiction is common among professionals who are active military members, retired, or serving in the National Guard or reserves. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) explains that one in ten veterans seek care for substance abuse. This is slightly higher than the prevalence found in the general population.

There are many theories regarding the prevalence of addiction in military members and veterans. One theory is that life in the military has inherent stressors like deployment, training, and constantly changing environments. Additionally, military culture may increase these issues as drugs and alcohol are commonly used as a way to cope with the stress of combat. In the military, there is a zero-tolerance policy and many stigmas around addiction treatment. This can make it even more difficult to get help.

The Value of Getting Help

However, in seeking help for your mental health and addiction, you can learn how to live a more fulfilling and joyful life. Whether you are actively in the military, retired, or in the reserves, getting treatment will change your life. When you are not using drugs and alcohol to cope with stress, you can learn true coping skills that will help you to work through problems as they arise rather than covering them up with substance use.

Because your level of wellness impacts the people around you, getting treatment can also benefit your loved ones. Untreated addiction and mental health issues change how you react to your loved ones. These changes make it hard to create and maintain authentic connections. Therefore, without treatment, you may not be getting the support you need. All the while, your loved ones may be missing their harmonious relationship with you. Treatment can help both of you have the relationships you deserve.

TRICARE is an initiative that proves healthcare for active military members, members of the reserves and National Guard, and retired military members. If you are struggling with addiction and mental health disorders, TRICARE can help you get rehab services in the Orange Country, California area. While coverage will vary depending on the treatment facility and your TRICARE plan, drug and alcohol rehab services are often covered.
