How Can I Bounce Back After Relapse?

Recovery is a long, continual process that can involve individuals learning how to rebound after relapse. While relapse is common in recovery from addiction, ideally, clients learn tools that help decrease the risk of relapse during treatment. For many, re-engaging in professional detox and treatment is crucial to refocus on one’s efforts to remain sober.

How Can I Bounce Back After Relapse?

Treatment options for addiction vary, and each client’s experience will be unique. This is the same when clients bounce back after relapse. For many, re-engaging in detox and treatment are healthy options. This allows you support during the important relapse process.

Having support from mental health professionals is key to being successful following a relapse. You may not know immediately what caused you to relapse, and treatment support is one option that can help immensely. Through different therapeutic modalities — like cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy, or group therapy — you can discover what changes you need to make to maintain sobriety in the future.

Recovery is a journey and requires a significant amount of change in your life. To maintain sobriety, you will need to learn new coping mechanisms and truly learn to live a different life. Adjusting your outlook on relapse is one way to help you bounce back after it occurs. Relapse is common and a process during which you can learn more about yourself and what changes you need to make to live a sober life. Rather than an event that makes you less than another person, it can help to see it as a learning opportunity.

Relapse Prevention

One of the main goals of treatment is to prevent relapse. However, this does not mean that anyone who has gone through treatment will not relapse. Recovery is a process of change, and at each stage of recovery, different risk factors exist for relapse. Different tools are required to rebound after relapse.

Through treatment, clients learn to identify the signs of relapse. During recovery, relapse is a process rather than an event. It is a multi-step process that may begin months before the actual act of using a substance. Learning the signs of relapse can help one bounce back after relapse with decreased fear. Being prepared for each stage and understanding what you can do to help decrease your risk of preceding physical relapse.

Emotional Relapse

During the emotional relapse phase, clients are not thinking about substance use. Instead, it is the precursor to thinking about using. In this phase, clients are not functionally taking care of themselves. This can include things like not prioritizing sleeping habits or healthy eating. It can also look like bottling up emotions, not sharing, or overall not caring for their emotional needs.

This phase is important to be aware of, as it emphasizes the value of self-care. When you bounce back from a relapse, identifying what aspects brought you to relapse can help to adjust your lens of relapse. You can make different choices in the future, and one of them that is helpful is to emphasize self-care. At Pacific Sands Recovery Center, we believe the skill of self-care is vital, and as such, is integrated into our treatment programs.

Mental Relapse

The transition from emotional relapse into mental relapse is a natural process. In this phase, clients begin to think about using substances. There is an internal argument going on: one part of the mind wants to, and the other resists. However, over time, the cravings and thought patterns begin to be swayed toward substance use.

This differs from occasional thoughts of using substances. Instead, these thoughts are persistent and grow in consistency. Being aware of mental relapse is critical to bouncing back from relapse. It can help you to be confident in your awareness of thoughts that are a part of mental relapse. Finding yourself bargaining signals that you are in mental relapse, and, thus, need to reach out to your support or seek support to maintain sobriety.

Physical Relapse

In physical relapse, the client begins using the substance they are addicted to. It is the final stage and occurs after weeks or months of emotional and mental relapse. This stage seems obvious. An opportunity arose, and it seems like this is the step to relapse. It’s important to understand that this is actually the final step rather than the only step.

Treatment: Bounce Back After Relapse

Many aspects of treatment help you to rebound after relapse. One of the main goals of treatment is to help prevent future relapse and process decisions that led you to relapse. Aspects of treatment that help prevent relapse often include the following:

  • Therapy
  • Medication
  • Monitoring
  • Support
  • Other interventions

In treatment, mental health professionals can help you discover what aspects help you in your unique journey of recovery.
