We know our clients come ready to do the work to get sober. Sobriety begins with detoxing from the substance or substances that are in your system to reach an abstinent state. Seeking medically assisted detox offers individuals the support they need since withdrawal can be painful and life threatening if attempted alone.
At our Orange County detox, our medically supervised detoxification process allows the body to cleanse itself, so addiction treatment can begin.
By knowing the full extent of your addiction, we can create a plan for stabilizing you during detox. You might have withdrawal symptoms during detox, which can vary from mild to life-threatening.
Stabilization of Symptoms
Next, you will undergo the stabilization phase. During this phase, you will get medical supervision and psychological support for withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms can be uncomfortable, painful, and even dangerous. For this reason, you need professional detox services to stabilize as your body readjusts to no longer having drugs and alcohol.
In addition, you might use medications to ease your symptoms. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combines FDA-approved medications with behavioral therapy. MAT is best for those with severe addictions to opioids and alcohol.
Stabilization should take about 1 to 2 weeks. Your withdrawal symptoms should peak within about 3 days after you stop using or drinking. After that, your symptoms will taper off, and you will begin preparing for continued treatment.
Preparation for Continued Treatment
Lastly, Orange County detox concludes with preparation for continued treatment. Detox is only the first stage of addiction treatment. You will need to continue treatment at either an inpatient or outpatient rehab program for the best outcomes. Thus, your treatment team will prepare you for the next stages of your treatment.
Pacific Sands Recovery provides these services after Orange County detox to help you move from one phase to the next. By continuing treatment within the same program, you can transition from one level of care to the next while maintaining connections with peers and staff. As a result, you don’t need to feel like you are starting over with a new facility as you progress in recovery.
Can I Detox at Home?
Detoxing at home without medical supervision can be unbearable and even life-threatening. When you detox at home, you increase your chances of relapse due to the accessibility of substances when withdrawal symptoms begin to peak. At first, you might feel like you can manage your symptoms without help. However, as your withdrawal symptoms increase in intensity, you might find yourself seeking drugs and alcohol again to stop these symptoms.
Withdrawal symptoms can vary depending upon which substances you use; however, some of the most common symptoms among all substances include:
- Sleeping issues
- Feeling tired or physically weak
- Difficulty thinking clearly and focusing
- Change in appetite
- Sweating and clammy skin
- Fever and chills
- Intense cravings
- Muscle aches
- Depression
- Anxiety
Some withdrawal symptoms can lead to breathing or cardiovascular issues. These symptoms can lead to hypertension, irregular heartbeat, or stroke. In addition to these symptoms, you might have extreme mental confusion or hallucinations, which could lead to dangerous behaviors.
Inpatient detox services can help you safely manage your withdrawal symptoms. You can also get support for the emotional symptoms arising during detox. Withdrawal can be difficult, especially without the help of professionals in a secure environment away from any temptation.
Drug and Alcohol Detox Withdrawal Symptoms
Drug and alcohol withdrawal symptoms are not the same for every client, just as they are not the same for every substance. However, they are the same in that detox is challenging and often uncomfortable or even painful to endure. Our round-the-clock team has experience with a wide range of substances and will work with you to ease both the physical and mental discomfort you experience as you detox.
Alcohol Detox + Withdrawal Symptoms
While opioid withdrawal is known for being difficult, alcohol withdrawal can be just as dangerous if attempted alone–and can even be fatal. A person suffering from alcohol dependency who stops cold turkey can experience serious and life-threatening side effects such as dehydration, vomiting, abnormal heart rhythms and delirium tremens (rapid onset of confusion).
It’s critical that clients with alcohol dependency attempt detoxification in a safe and medically supervised environment. The detox timeline for alcohol typically occurs in three stages, which, with proper treatment, most commonly takes 1 to 2 weeks to complete.
Benzodiazepines Detox + Withdrawal Symptoms
Users of prescription anxiety medications can experience severe withdrawal symptoms after discontinuing use. Xanax, Klonopin, Valium, or Ativan withdrawal symptoms range from irritability, headaches, sweating and dizziness, to hallucinations, insomnia, panic attacks and seizures. The more prolonged the use, the worse the client’s withdrawal symptoms will be. Benzodiazepine detoxification should only be attempted under the care of qualified addiction treatment professionals. The benzodiazepine detox timeline varies from person to person; the worst withdrawal symptoms usually occur for up to 2 weeks before slowly tapering off. Some people will be symptom-free within a few weeks, whereas others may deal with them for a longer period of time.
Cocaine Detox + Meth Detox Withdrawal Symptoms
Methamphetamine and cocaine withdrawal typically have less acute withdrawal symptoms during detox. However, people will often experience intense cravings and discomfort during the detox process. Our 24-hour staff supervision and medication can help ease this process and help prevent relapse during the early steps of recovery. For both of these drugs, withdrawal symptoms can begin within as little as an hour after your last dose has worn off. The detox timeline usually lasts 7 to 10 days, but can often be longer for meth addicts who have been using for a long time.
Opiate Detox Withdrawal Symptoms
People going through heroin withdrawal or opiate withdrawal (including prescription painkillers) experience symptoms such as pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. In most cases, the withdrawal symptoms are so severe the user feels the need to relapse immediately. We manage withdrawal symptoms so that clients with oxycodone, heroin, roxycodone, Vicodin, Dilaudid or Percocet addiction can make it through withdrawal safely and with minimum discomfort. For most clients, the opioid detox timeline lasts for about 7 to 10 days, though for some it may last as long as two weeks.
The severity of withdrawal symptoms, both physical and psychological, often depends on how long a person has used alcohol or drugs. The time it takes to detox from substances depends on the substances, the frequency of the substance use, and the person’s body type. While home detox in Orange County can last anywhere from three to ten days, it may take weeks or even months to be completely free of withdrawal symptoms.
Withdrawal Timelines for Different Substances
Alcohol. The first symptoms of withdrawal from alcohol may appear within several hours after the last drink. In addition, the withdrawal symptoms can peak over 24 to 72 hours. A condition known as Delirium Tremens can develop within 48 to 72 hours after heavy drinking. Delirium Tremens can last anywhere between 3 and 8 days.
Opioids. Withdrawal symptoms of shorter-acting opioids like prescription painkillers and heroin can begin anywhere between 8 to 24 hours after the last use. These symptoms can continue for 4 to 10 days. The withdrawal symptoms of longer-acting opioids like methadone can take 2 to 4 days to start and last for up to 10 days or longer.
Benzodiazepines. Withdrawal from prescription benzos like Xanax and Valium tend to start within 1 to 4 days after the last use. It can peak in severity in the first couple of weeks. In some cases, withdrawal symptoms from benzos can be felt for months or even years without treatment or medication.
The Benefits of Detoxing at a Treatment Facility
If you’re addicted to drugs and want to stop using, your recovery should begin in a safe and secure setting. Detox programs begin with an initial assessment of your detoxification needs. The most effective detox programs feature a team of medical professionals. They can monitor and guide you through the most difficult stages of the detox process. Keeping you safe and comfortable is a priority during this process. If necessary, medication can be given to alleviate the more severe symptoms of withdrawal.
