Each year, thousands of people across America make the choice to seek help for their drug or alcohol addiction. In addition to their dependency, they may also need assistance for a co-occurring mental health disorder. Professional treatment can make a world of difference, but what about the cost?
A person considering rehabilitation may wonder, “Will United Healthcare cover the cost of my rehab?” Fortunately, United Healthcare rehab facilities can help those seeking addiction and mental health treatment.
Does United Healthcare Cover Rehab?
In short, United Healthcare has policy coverage for most substance abuse treatments. The types of rehab programs typically covered fall under one of four main categories:
- Outpatient drug and alcohol abuse rehabilitation
- Outpatient detoxification
- Inpatient hospital detoxification
- Inpatient rehabilitation
It is important to note that some policies may have pre-certification requirements that must be met prior to recovery. These may depend upon both the services provided. It can also depend on whether or not a program is an inpatient or outpatient one.
Does the Rehab Center Need to be In-Network?
Contrary to what many people initially believe, the rehab center does not require it to be in-network. However, if the center is not in-network, this may result in larger coinsurance or copay rates. Other plans may not cover services that are out-of-network at all, meaning a person would be responsible for the entire cost. Because of this, it is best to first contact a United Healthcare representative in order to determine total costs, and if out-of-network coverage will be approved.
There are a couple of key factors in determining inpatient coverage at United Healthcare rehab facilities. This type of coverage depends on both the specific type of plan a person has. It also depends on the state that they live in. Additionally, United Healthcare provides individual and family insurance plans, but also offers short-term health insurance coverage which may provide coverage for substance abuse treatment.
Short-term medical plans with United Healthcare can help a person cover their expenses. However, the exception to this is the Short Term Medical Value plan. This is the lowest premium plan, and it does not cover substance abuse treatment expenses. In contrast, the remaining short-term plans UnitedHealthcare offers all have some degree of coverage.
Short Term Medical Plus policies, as well as others offered by United Healthcare, can provide a 20% to 30% deductible. After its payment, insurance plans can cover anywhere from 1,000 to 10,000 dollars worth of expenses. However, many of these plans carry a term maximum of $3,000. This means the individual policyholder will have to cover any expenses over this amount.
Many of the offerings in United Healthcare’s outpatient coverage plans are similar to those of their inpatient coverage plans. Expenses may vary, however, United Healthcare offers options for short-term coverage for outpatient care. This means low-level and short-term plans are both available to help with the cost of treatment.
The short-term plans of United Healthcare’s outpatient coverage require a 20% to 30% coinsurance after deductible. Additionally, for individual outpatient doctor visits, clients are limited to $50 per visit. There is also a $3,000 policy term maximum for each person covered under short-term coverage.
